Vampires, disco, London...Rachel Koller Craft's new book is campy fun!

Set in London across the glittering, glamourous days of nightclubbing during the height of 1970s disco to the present day, a story of toxic friendship between two female vampires, the maker, and the companion, becomes a treacherous cat-and-mouse game when one of them wants to go her own way.

This is not your usual vampire story, although lots of traditional vampire lore is woven in. It's modern with a mash-up of genres, including thriller and women's fiction, with a good dash of horror. It was campy and drama-filled, especially as the suspense built and the drama and twists landed in the second half. It focuses on the relationship between Nicola, the 200-year-old vampire, and Amber, the woman she meets in a disco, befriends, and then turns. After 50 years, although a deadly gamble, Amber wants her freedom from controlling Nicola. But Nicola has lost previous companions and holds on even tighter to Amber. Told in dual POV with flashbacks, Nicola is a compelling character, one I mostly loved to hate. And I rooted for Amber. The two of them are vivid, vicious, and vindictive. There is a hierarchy in vampire relationships, and the author uses them very well to depict the complicated dynamics at play here. An eclectic group of supporting characters and fun disco music references round out the book. If you'd be interested in a paranormal thriller that isn't too scary for spooky season, check out this one!

The audiobook is narrated by Katherine Lee McEwan and Suzanne Elise Freeman, who are phenomenal! Hearing Nicola's British accent and calculating energy, and the range of emotions in Amber made the story come alive. The narrators hit all the right notes, from the snarky dialogue to desperation to betrayal, and made this very entertaining!

PUBLISHER'S SYNOPSIS:

Locked in a toxic female friendship, two vampires careen toward catastrophe in this dark and dazzling page-turner, set amidst London's glittering disco scene.

London 1979. Two women with a deep love for disco meet one fateful night on the dance floor, changing the course of both their lives forever.

Nicola, a beautiful and brooding vampire for nearly two centuries, can’t resist fun-loving and feisty Amber from America, ultimately offeringan eternity together where the glamour of nightlife always takes center stage.

But not all is what it seems.

Nearly fifty years later, after an unexpected betrayal, Amber wants out from under Nicola’s thumb, but it won’t be so simple to break up this festering friendship when she learns others have done the same—and wound up dead.

Sensing Amber’s restlessness and in one last play to keep her close, Nicola proposes they open a nightclub of their very own, hearkening back to their best days as dancing queens.

Amber agrees but she’s secretly hatching a dangerous escape plan. And if she fails…the party is over for good.
